The Very Rev. A.J. Heine, Jr.

The Very Rev. Wm. A.J. Heine, Jr . has served as Rector of St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church, Metairie since July of 2006. Located near the intersection of Veterans and Transcontinental Blvd., St. Augustine’s continues to be an active, vital, and engaged presence in the Metairie community. St. Augustine’s has continued a pattern of steady growth since 2006, totaling approximately 250 families of both longtime members as well as new families from the surrounding neighborhoods.
Fr. AJ was born and raised in the New Orleans area and then attended Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee where he received his undergraduate degree in Business Administration. After several years in Memphis working in sales and marketing, he returned to Louisiana to enter private business as a health insurance broker. It was at this time of spiritual growth and service in lay ministries that AJ realized a calling to work with people. During the discernment for ministry he served as Vice President for Marketing & Membership for the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry.
At Seabury-Western Seminary, Evanston, IL he received a masters of divinity degree.
AJ won the Charles Palmerston Anderson Scholar Award in his Middler year for the highest GPA. As a senior, AJ received the Henry Hoover Leadership Award.
AJ was ordained to the priesthood on July 5, 2003, following assignment to St. James as a curate where he served as Chaplain for St. James Day School in addition to staff assignments of teaching, pastoral care, and Young Adult Ministry. He also serves as Dean of the Jefferson Deanery and Chair of the Board of Advisors of Episcopal Community Services of LA. He enjoys reading, movies, camping and kayak fishing in the Louisiana marsh. A.J. has two children, Emily and Gus.
